How do I choose the right excess amount?

      Written by Majed Abdulaal

      Updated June 3rd, 2026

Choose a high excess if you want to lower your insurance premium, and if you can afford to pay it. That last part is important: If you don’t have enough savings, it's better to not get a high deductible.

Choose a low excess if you can’t pay a high one, or if you want to protect your personal costs. This could be a good idea if you live in a crowded area with higher chances of accidents.
